“Why do we teach girls that their perspectives are inherently untrustworthy?”
What a remarkable memoir! Machado draws you into the depths of her abusive queer relationship with her hauntingly, lyrical prose. Through a series of short poetic style chapters, sometimes only a sentence long, Machado expertly illustrates the complexities of abuse from beginning to end. She candidly delves into a difficult subject matter, explaining that events that led to her emotionally charged relationship and how her partner manipulated and emotional abused her. Furthermore, her exploration on the minimisation of abuse in the LGBTQ+ community was incredibly insightful. Particularly her focus on the ‘taboo’ nature of violence within queer relationships.
